Due south compass direction for Tucson is just to the right of Mt. Wrightson. The ocotillo (right) and mesquite tree (left) introduce an abundance of plant life on this site. The knoll in the backgroud is a protected peak with The Canyon. Interesting fact: Just as we humans are suspended from an internal structure of bones, so to is a saguaro, only they're called ribs. There are about 30 ribs in the trunk and a dozen in each branch. Although the wood looks spongy and weak, the sum of the ribs is greater than their individual parts, allowing plants to sway slightly in the wind while sustaning heavy loads without buckling.
